Head Coach - Steve Smyte

Coach Steve Smyte returned last year for his second stint as head coach with the Blue Devils. 

Coach Smyte brings a wealth of coaching experience to our program.  Most recently serving as an offensive consultant to UCD in 2016.  He served as the head coach to the DHS from 2009 to 2012 a period in which Davis High showed continual improved in their record, academics, and community involvement .  Before that he served as an assistant coach at Boise State, helping the Broncos to two WAC championships and their first Top Ten national ranking, two bowl games (Liberty and MPC Computer Bowls) and a second and eight place in the nation offensive rankings.  His primary responsibilities were wide receivers and assisting on special teams.  His wide receivers who progressed to professional football included Legadu Nanee(San Diego), Drisan James(Chicago & CFL), Jerrard Rabb(Dallas), Lawrence Bady(Atlanta), TJ Acree(BC Lions, CFL), Brett Ralph(Calgary, CFL).   

Prior to his time at Boise State he spent 8 years coaching at UC Davis as their wide receiver coach and one year with the offensive line. UC Davis played in 7 consecutive playoff appearances during this time and 4 National Semi Final contests. At UCD Smyte helped send the following players to the next level: Daniel Fells(Atlanta, Oakland, Denver, New England), Onome Ojo(New Orleans & Tampa Bay) as well as several wide outs that went to NFL camps including DHS’s own John Shoemaker and Mike Olivia, Tony Kays and Charlie Enos (all UCD Intercollegiate Athletics Hall Of Fame inductees).

Before that he spent two years as a coach assistant with the Sacramento Gold Miners of the CFL, responsible for running backs, special teams(92), quarterbacks and receivers(93). During this time QB David Archer threw for 6023 yards in 1993 still the 5th highest total in CFL history and Rod Harris (WR) and Mike Oliphant (RB) were named all CFL. He also was head coach of the Golden West Football league champions River City Gamblers (where Smyte was named Coach of the Year after a 9-0 season and West Regional Championship) and at American River College (where Smyte coached DB’s and helped ARC to two top 10 JC Gridwire finishes and two bowl games).

Coach Smyte
is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, where he earned a bachelor ’s degree in both Education and Physical Education, and holds a master’s degree in Education from Sacramento State.  Coach Smyte is a longtime Davis guy, where he has lived and worked with his wife Rose and is the proud dad of two wonderful daughters who graduated from Davis High: Alexondra (2014 graduate  of UC Davis) and Juliana (2012 graduate of UC Berkeley).
