Athletics: Gradual Return
As a school district, we understand that we play a key role in contributing to public health mitigation efforts. We also recognize that the safety and well-being of students, staff and our entire community is a collective responsibility. In the last several weeks, we have received many questions about the potential for the gradual opening of athletics and suggestions for how safe and cautious return to play might happen. Student engagement in extracurricular and sport activities is a key element of mental health and well-being and we are cognizant of the strong sports tradition in our community. For these reasons, DJUSD has been carefully considering how best to provide safe opportunities through athletics balanced with very real health and safety considerations.
Consistent with the Yolo County and State public health guidelines and the Yolo County Task Force Planning Recommendations, Davis Senior High athletic teams will be permitted to begin with optional, modified team practice on after receiving sport-specific District approval from the Athletic Department. Practices must be held outdoors and follow pre-approved protocols. Currently there are no plans to open school facilities, except restrooms. DJUSD will be closely monitoring teams as well as the local public health information, and will make future decisions and revisions that err on the side of student and staff health and safety.
